Arthas merged with the entity known as the Lich King and then murdered the guy — now living rent-free as a ghost in his mind — so he never had to give up his turn on the Nintendo. However, achieving his full power requires having two separate cursed artefacts — the Helm of Domination and the runeblade, Frostmourne. Without these, his powers are far more limited.

His physical abilities exceed that of an average human. As a Death Knight, he can passively perceive souls, animate and control the dead, perceive and interact with ghosts, and corrupt living things. He has ice magic and a passive frost "aura" that grants him resistance to temperature extremes.

He will suffer the Endless Hunger, an affliction common to Death Knights that compels them to inflict pain and suffering or suffer excruciating pain and potentially madness. The trade-off is that inflicting suffering on others empowers or heals him.

Personality

What is your character most afraid of? How are they defined by this fear? (100-300 words)

Arthas is more defined by his fears than he realises. His greatest fear is failure, but many things fit under that umbrella. He is afraid of making mistakes, especially if those mistakes make him a bad king who lets his people down or gets innocents killed. When he is most afraid, Arthas thinks about his horse, Invincible, as the accident that led to the stallion's death is what he considers his greatest mistake. The fear that he will repeat this mistake haunts him throughout his life.

He fears rejection so much that he makes Jaina Proudmoore promise never to deny him because he can't stand the thought. At the same time, when Jaina mentions the likelihood that their future children will be fair-haired, he instantly panics and breaks up with her on the spot because he is too afraid that he might ruin everything.

Arthas immediately fucking things up in the present because he's trying so hard to avert the possibility of ruining them in the future is a common theme for him.

Under duress, these fears heavily clouded his judgement and drove him to the extremes that would lead to his corruption.

What is your character's greatest desire? How are they defined by this desire? (100-300 words)

To protect and save his people. This is underscored by a desire for love and acceptance because it's all wrapped up in what Arthas felt was his responsibility as the Crown Prince of Lordaeron. He grew up believing that people would only love him if he was a ruler who could protect them. It probably did not help that he was far more sheltered than other royal children, as his often childish view of the world was abruptly shattered on more than one occasion by the horrors of a world often gripped by war and demonic magic.

Arthas' empathy was one of his greatest strengths, especially for a paladin, and Uther spoke fondly of Arthas' genuine compassion for his people. At the same time, he also recognised the danger this would pose if Arthas did not learn how to curb his obsessions. Uther remarked how his single-minded determination could border on zealotry when coupled with this devotion.

Watching his people suffer and die to the Scourge was more than Arthas could bear, and he grew desperate. There were many instances along the way where he could've stopped and sought an alternative, but Arthas rejected them all. He thought about Invincible, and reminded himself he could not risk failing to have the power to save an innocent life ever again.

He felt what love and acceptance he had in the world slipping away each time he failed. No one expected him to single-handedly solve the Scourge problem, but Arthas convinced himself that it was fully his responsibility. It all became too much to bear at Stratholme when Uther and Jaina refused to purge the city.

Without love and acceptance, Arthas ruthlessly and single-mindedly fixated on vengeance — a tendency that had most often drawn criticism from others.

How will not having memories change your character? What core personality traits, if any, will change? How? (200-300 words)

In canon, we see Arthas before the fall. He wasn't a bad person but rather deeply empathetic and flawed, ultimately manipulated by malevolent external forces beyond his comprehension.

Even so, this manipulation does not mean he is innocent. Nothing could deter him from that goal once he decided he was willing to pay any price in pursuit of vengeance. He never stopped to wonder if acquiring Frostmourne would truly solve all his problems until the sword was in his hand, and by then, it was far too late — when he picked up that cursed blade, Arthas paid for it with his soul.

After becoming a Death Knight, he claimed to no longer feel remorse, shame, or pity. He became ruthless and cynical with a cruel sense of humour. When he became the Lich King, he destroyed the last remnants of his humanity and became truly monstrous, hellbent on "scourging" the world to cleanse it of the living.

Without memories of the countless atrocities he's committed, Arthas will again resemble his younger self. He will remain the man of action that he's always been — brave, impulsive, and straightforward — but he will also be free of the pressures and responsibilities of his station. It is no longer a source of many of his insecurities.

At the same time, he may find fewer reasons to suppress his less favourable traits without a royal standard to hold himself to. He can still be vindictive, quick to anger, and exceptionally arrogant by nature.

Also, while Arthas' memories inform him that he is a paladin, he still possesses the body and soul of an undead Death Knight. He will not have context for the urges he has with and without the compulsion of the Endless Hunger and will likely struggle with that morality.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Arthas looks like the well-preserved corpse of a man who froze to death. His sea-green eyes are dimly lit by a pale blue light. The air around him is always unnaturally cold, and something about him seems wrong, even to those typically incapable of sensing magic.

He is tall at 6'5" (197cm) and solidly built, imposing even without the added bulk of the dark plate armour he wears, which is adorned with monstrous images of Death. He carries himself confidently, considering himself no less of a king simply because his world has been consumed by Oblivion.

When he speaks, his voice has a strange hollowness about it that makes it seem unnatural. As he derives power from sources that are in opposition to life and order in his world, finding everything about him off-putting is perfectly natural.

SHARD

His Shard looks and feels like a rough-cut chunk of blue glacial ice and glows with the same light as his eyes. It emanates intense cold, and the Death magic that sustains him is concentrated within it, making it unpleasant to the touch. It occupies the space where his heart used to be.

PERSONALITY

In life, Arthas had all the most valuable traits a king and paladin of the Light could have — he was brave, strong, and deeply devoted to his people. He was loved for his empathy and the way he never saw rank when interacting with his subjects. But, he was also arrogant, short-tempered, and deeply vengeful — traits that would all worsen when Arthas picked up Frostmourne for the first time.

When he became the Lich King, he cut out the rest of his humanity very literally, leaving only the darkest parts of himself behind. With the shattering of Frostmourne, Arthas has regained the splinters of his soul that had been trapped within the blade for years.

Arthas has been reunited with some measure of his humanity, but he is still ruthlessly committed to getting what he wants.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

undead physiology Arthas became undead at some point after acquiring Frostmourne. He does not need to breathe or sleep, and he is able to survive without a heart. In canon, he never gets tired, and he is functionally immortal.

For RP purposes, Arthas will find that although he can hold out much longer than a living Shardbearer, he tires in Kenos. Eating probably helps, so he might as well start doing it again! Since he can survive without a heart, Dissipation will require a headshot in true zombie fashion.

Despite having no runeblade, Arthas will also continue to suffer the Endless Hunger, an affliction common to all Death Knights that compels them to inflict pain or suffering on others. Denying this hunger causes excruciating pain and can eventually result in a loss of control if the urge isn't satisfied sufficiently. It is the result of Arthas regaining the parts of his soul that had been trapped within Frostmourne, but the cursed blade has left a permanent mark.

He is also particularly vulnerable to Holy magic.

enhanced resistances He does not suffer from exposure to extremely low temperatures and has a much higher tolerance to warm temperatures (but not fire!). He is immune to most, if not all, diseases unless they are magical in nature.

combat skills Trained and experienced in hand-to-hand/unarmed combat, one- and two-handed swords and maces, as well as shields.

necromancy

In canon, Arthas — as the Lich King — is capable of godlike feats of necromancy, such as simultaneously commanding massive hordes of undead across several continents. However, he is (thankfully) automatically nerfed on arrival because the bulk of the Lich King's power is derived from two cursed objects — the Helm of Domination and Frostmourne. Without these objects, Arthas' powers are greatly limited.
He is a Death Knight and a necromancer of the Scourge, so almost all of his abilities utilise Death and Shadow magic. These are commonly used together with the Runic language to create potent effects. I have also compiled some extra necromancy lore here.
He is also capable of using Frost magic and possesses a passive frost "aura" that makes the air around him so cold that ice can still form on his armour even in warm weather. It makes him immune to weather-based temperature extremes.
He is able to sense Holy energy, Death energy, and souls.
He is not capable of sensing the same level of detail that John could sense, but he can sense anything with a pulse or at least a circulatory system via a passive ability to sense blood.
He can puppet and reanimate dead bodies.
He can perceive, manipulate, and bind souls and ghosts.
He can create wards using blood, bone, and runes.
He can drain another person's vital energy or use them like a battery by inflicting pain.
He can create explosions using necromantic energy.
He can use blood and flesh magic to harm or heal.

Physical Violence: It's likely to happen often with this character. Happy to write out fights or just do the lead-up and the aftermath.

Physical Affection: It won't be easy with his attitude, but it's not impossible because he craves human contact more than he's willing to admit.

Shipping/Sex: It's not something he is seeking out or initiating, but he will have sex depending on the situation. I do not really write smut but I'm happy to write everything leading up to it! Handwaving off-camera hookups is also good! Blue post said death knights fuck, so here we are.

Mental/Communion: In Communion, there is always a forcefulness behind his presence, which feels much larger and darker than a human should be capable of. It's been described as something sharp and icy you can feel in the back of your skull. Other Iconoclasts can sense his urges to cause pain and suffering.

At one time, Arthas embodied the hopes and dreams of a nation and its greatest defenders. He had all the makings of an excellent king — strength, bravery, a fierce devotion to his people — and everyone was sure his future reign would be as long and prosperous as his father's had been.

Arthas was trained as a paladin by Uther the Lightbringer, who felt confident that his guidance would temper Arthas' less desirable traits despite the concerns he'd had.

Unfortunately, no one could have foreseen how deep Arthas' insecurities ran or how far he would be willing to pursue his single-minded obsessions.

When the plague of undeath began sweeping across Lordaeron, Arthas was determined to stop it at any cost. He took up the cursed runeblade Frostmourne in order to defeat the dreadlord Mal'Ganis, but he ended up losing his soul in the process.

Now a Death Knight of the Scourge, Arthas lead an undead army in destroying Lordaeron, Quel'thalas, and Dalaran. Eventually, he would travel to Icecrown Glacier on the continent of Northrend and merge with the Lich King. Taking the power for himself, he would rule for years before finally being defeated through a joint effort by the Horde and Alliance.
